The local church life in Atlanta was the best family life for me. Although my parents were separated during six of my young and formative years, I had many older brothers in Christ (spiritual fathers) in the church to more than fill up the enormous hole in my being created by my absent father. My spiritual fathers never belittled or judged my absent father, but they took the lead to pray for his salvation and for the restoration of my family. They never agreed with me when I condemned my father, but they helped me to pray for him. As a result I always felt I could call any of my spiritual fathers whether I was depressed or happy. Whatever my condition, they were always ready to cherish me by taking me to a soccer game, Six Flags, or out for an ice cream cone. Although many of my spiritual fathers have their own children, they did not give me second rate care. They have the same hope for me as they did for their own children-that I would become a living and functioning member of the one Body of Christ.
